I will always remember the day I was told I had cancer. As a lawyer I had handled cases involving the delayed diagnosis of cancer and yet even this experience had not prepared me for hearing those words used to talk about my own diagnosis. Given that I had worked as a delayed diagnosis of cancer lawyer and knew the symptoms of several different kinds of cancers, including advanced colon cancer I did not wait the moment I began to show symptoms myself. I consulted with my primary care physician who agreed that even though I was too young for routine screening for colon cancer and regardless that I had no family history of colon cancer (at the time) that I needed to nonetheless undergo a colonoscopy to rule out cancer as the source of my symptoms.

The colonoscopy showed that I had a significant cancerous tumor . Surgery established that it had by then begun spreading and was stage 3 colon cancer. Bad news. The one good part of this was that at least it had not reached stage 4 colon cancer. However it was nonetheless metastatic colon cancer that had spread to my lymph nodes. And I had an instant of real fear and uncertainty when I was given the news. I understood that my chances of long term survival were just about 50%. The fact that I was an attorney who had handled medical malpractice claims, even cases involving colon cancer, did not prevent that moment of real panic and fear. For at that moment I believed I was going to die

At that time I reached out to a friend who was also a lawyer and had been one of my mentors. I believe it was pure instinct that I reached out to him first. He did not sugar coat it. And that was really what I needed. Someone else to say out loud what the reality was and what had to be done. He then offered to help with whatever I needed. After that the managing partner at the firm, another good friend, offered to handle all my cases during my treatment. He did not ask for anything in return. The offer was made as a colleague and a friend. I have alwats been grateful to him for that.

Although I required a couple of weeks to recuperate from surgery and even though there were days while undergoing chemotherapy when I needed to just rest, I was, for the most part, able to keep working. This gave me immense pleasure. I felt that I was able to carry my weight and lead pretty much a normal life during my treatment. Seven years after my treatment I show no evidence of cancer. If I had waited even just a number of months the cancer could have continued to advance and I most likely would have lost the battle against this dreadful disase.

Clearly, when you have symptoms that could be caused by colon cancer getting the right test without delay may save your life. When you can diagnose the cancer sufficiently early best of all while it is just a polyp you will have additional treatment possibilities and a much higher possibility of surviving.
